Another picture shows a woman seated with her legs wide apart and a man's hand covering her crotch.

About me

A series of nude photos from the 19th century have been removed from an art gallery after outraged visitors said they were "disgusting and obscene. The Victorian artdepicting nude and partially clothed women, received complaints after being put on display as part of a Valentine's Day "Romance" exhibition.

But the photos were spotted by three women, aged between 60 and 80, who were outraged by the works, describing them as 'obscene and bordered on pornographic. The women had not visited to view the exhibition, but saw the works while walking around the centre's garden centre and cafe. Di Nee, 65, who runs The Cube Gallery with her husband Martin, said: "We had three separate complaints from older ladies.

However, after an overwhelming show of public support, the couple decided to reinstate the pieces - with a warning to visitors. Di said: "Obviously we didn't want to offend anyone visiting the exhibition so we took them down straight away. Among the black-and-white photographs is a picture of three naked ladies holding hands and dancing.

Another photo shows a lady wearing stockings and facing away from the camera with a bare bottom while a third shows a naked woman sitting on a plinth. Di said it is not known who the photographic works are by and they were donated to the gallery by a local collector. The photographs were displayed alongside work by local sculptors and artists, as well as works by Sir William Russell Flint and John Yardley.

The free "Romance" exhibition has pulled together photos, paintings and postcards from various collections and is within the South Downs Heritage Centre. TV Films. Funeral Notices Horoscopes Offers Newsletter up.
