Every time I use the bathroom at one of my grandchildren's school events, I flash back to my own childhood. Coming face-to-face with the communal trough urinal and door-less toilet stalls triggers my feelings of juvenile embarrassment. In case a man has never used one of these urinals, eHow offers up advice on "How to Use a Trough Urinal. Communal bathing and spas have been around for thousands of years, but the concept of modesty is a relatively recent one for Western culture.

T he three nine-year-old girls were participating in a regular pandemic school activity: a video call using Whereby. The abusive man exposed his penis and masturbated while talking to the young girls. One of the girls quickly told her parents, and luckily, the incident went no further. Young girls are supposed to learn ab o ut privacy violations because their best friend breaks a promise not to tell anyone who their schoolyard crush is.
Not as a result of sexual abuse during their school video call. Others have been racist and hateful.

Like Whereby, Zoom apologized for the incidents its users have experienced. But their solution is insulting: the users need more awareness.
It is, in my opinion, the choices these companies made when deing the software. They chose the default settings for their video software.
They made a decision not to provide clear warnings of the risks of changing a default setting. Decades of research indicate that default settings influence people, and we generally do not change them. It is time to hold companies able for their default settings. It is time to require, by law and by consumer expectation, default settings that following a principle of Data Protection by Default.
For Instance, research suggests ificantly more people will agree to be organ donors if the form automatically opts them in verses when they have to give explicit consent to be a donor e. Based on this information, awareness is not an acceptable solution to prevent privacy and security incidents.
The default settings need to protect people with a clear warning if a user chooses to change that default. It is possible that companies honestly believe awareness materials are the answer. It is more plausible that companies set these defaults to increase their profitability.
Your users are disadvantageously uninformed. They trust you to make the best decision for them. Every time you fail to implement data protection by default, you fail your user. You fail to protect critical social values.
And depending on the function of your software, you fail to protect people and children from sexual, emotional, and physical harm. User awareness is not an acceptable answer. Data protection by default is.
